Whether you’re buying a radiator for a bathroom, a bedroom, a living room, or any other space in your home or business, it's essential to consider several factors to ensure you choose the right radiator for your needs. Here are some the key considerations we think you should keep in mind when buying radiators:
- Size and Dimensions - Consider the space available for installing the radiator. Remember that a radiator is not flush to the wall, take this into account, especially if you are adding on towel rail extensions. Measure the area where the radiator will be placed, including height, width, and depth, to ensure it fits properly. Choose a radiator size that balances heat output with space limitations.
- Fuel Type - This is a consideration that will usually dictated by your current central heating system. If you have pipework available then you can use a Central Heating type of radiator and connect this to the existing Central Heating system fairly easily. Electric radiators are ideal for spaces that do not have central heating pipework available. Electric radiators are standalone units that are connected to the existing electrical wiring. A Dual Fuel radiator combines both gas and electric heating options, providing flexibility and efficiency. Dual fuel radiators allow you to switch between central heating and electric heating as needed, these are ideal for summer use when the central heating is generally switched off but you want to turn on the bathroom radiator for drying towels etc.
- Radiator Type - Towel Radiators are specifically designed for bathrooms, these radiators serve the dual purpose of heating the room and drying towels. Panel Radiators feature multiple horizontal panels for increased surface area and heat distribution. Column Radiators are characterised by vertical columns, these radiators are a traditional option for period properties but can also add a more classic feel to a modern property. Designer Radiators come in more unique and contemporary designs and finishes, adding a decorative element to your home or office while providing heat. Choosing the right valves and getting the right thermostatic option for your space is also an important consideration.
- Material and Finish - Radiators come in many different materials, including mild steel, aluminium, cast iron, brass and stainless steel; each offers different qualities such as heat conductivity, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Choosing a finish from matt colours to shiny metallics, is down to your style and your room.
Bear in mind that you should not use a mild steel radiator on an open central heating system. This is because you cannot add a rust inhibitor to these systems. If in doubt contact us and we will be happy to advise.
- Heat Output - You will need to determine the heat output required for the radiator to effectively warm your space. Factors such as room size, insulation, ceiling height, and the number of windows and doors will influence the BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating needed. If you are unsure of the BTU rating you need to heat your room, we recommend the Eastbrook BTU Calculator to help you determine the appropriate heat output for your space.
Other things that may influence your home or office heating choices will be the installation and maintenance required for the radiator you choose and budget is always a key consideration.
